What is Tinnitus and What Can Be Done To Treat It?

Tinnitus is a common condition that can cause you to hear a ringing, rushing, or buzzing in your ears. Tinnitus is present in approximately 75% of all people with some form of hearing loss. While it will not cause you to lose your hearing, tinnitus is a leading indicator of hearing loss – even mild hearing loss. While there is no absolute cure for tinnitus, there are very effective treatments available including Lenire and/or specially programmed hearing devices.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tinnitus

I have tinnitus and have seen other doctors who told me there is no cure and I just have to live with it.  What can your clinic do for my tinnitus?

We hear that all the time.  That’s a common misconception. While it’s true tinnitus cannot be cured, it can be treated and managed effectively. We have an 85% success rate at reducing or even eliminating the perception of tinnitus.

FAQ image

What is your treatment for tinnitus- is it just Lenire?

We create a customized treatment plan for each patient based on the results of our tinnitus evaluation. This may include the Lenire device, hearing technology, and / or the use of our 9 week adaptation program called My Tinnitus Therapy.

FAQ image

What is Lenire and how does it work?

Lenire (Len-ear), which is Latin for β€˜soothe’, is the only commercially available, clinically trialed, dual mode tinnitus treatment device approved by the US FDA. It works using bimodal neuromodulation, which is the stimulation of not one but two nerves at the same time. With Lenire, for example, you have the combination of electrical stimulation via the tongue as well as auditory stimulation via the ear. Research has suggested that the combined stimulation of these two nerves drives stronger adaptive neuroplasticity, which in turn can reduce the brain’s attention and sensitivity to the tinnitus sound to a greater extent than when stimulating only a single nerve at a time.

FAQ image

How much does tinnitus treatment cost?

It depends on what treatment is prescribed. For example, a twelve month treatment plan with Lenire (including the consultation, digital therapeutics, the custom-programmed device, monitoring and follow up care) is $375 per month (OAC). If hearing devices are prescribed, those treatment plans are generally 48 months at $169-$219 per month, depending on needs. The initial consultation is complimentary and treatment recommendations and options will be provide at that time based on the results of our testing.

FAQ image

Will I need hearing aids as well as Lenire?

This will depend on the results of our initial examination. If the exam reveals that your tinnitus is caused by hearing loss, your provider will recommend a treatment plan using hearing aids and/or Lenire therapy.

FAQ image

How long does it take to work?

While some people experience almost immediate relief, for many others, it can take 6 weeks-12 months of following the treatment plan to achieve the desired results. During your treatment appointment, your provider will help you set some goals and milestones and during your follow-up appointments, those treatment goals will be discussed and evaluated. If a revision to your treatment plan is necessary to achieve your goals, your provider will discuss those options with you at that time.

FAQ image

What if I'm not ready for an appointment? What can I do?

We get it. It can seem like a lot to commit to treatment before you've tried other options. We created My Tinnitus Therapy ideally to be used with specially programmed hearing aids or with Lenire, but it has helped many people as a stand-alone treatment. It is a 9 week online course that teaches you tinnitus adaptation tools using audiological counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy. The course is normally $399, but using the code 'tinnitus25", you can get 25% off. You can also click here to get the offer.

FAQ image

Is tinnitus treatment guaranteed to work?

No medical treatment can be promised as a "sure thing". But here’s the good news: when patients follow their tinnitus treatment plan, more than 85% see meaningful improvement. To put that in perspective, that’s a higher success rate than blood pressure medicationβ€”one of the most common prescriptions in America

FAQ image

Does insurance cover tinnitus treatment?

If you have hearing loss along with the tinnitus, some insurance companies will cover a percentage of the hearing aids we use for our treatment plans. Currently we know of no insurance company covering the cost of Lenire. We do have a no-interest 12 month payment plan (OAC) for those who qualify. You may be able to use your HSA or Flex-spending benefits to purchase the device. To make treatment more affordable, we offer monthly payment plans on approved credit.
